Thorn Cottage
An extension to an arts & craft dwelling near Haslemere.
The existing house was designed and built in 1928 by a well known architect in the Arts & Craft style popular at the time. The property had not been altered since. A brief to extend and modernize with no loss of character presented an opportunity to breathe new life into the building and change the layout to suit modern family needs.
The position and orientation of the existing building drove the design towards a cranked extension of the existing linear plan, to fit the site constraints. This created a sheltered terrace area overlooking the garden, which serves as an external dining space and revives the link between house and garden.
